The Safety of Our Team Members is #1
UniSea, Inc. holds one of the most prestigious and highly regarded certification awards in the United States for plant and worker safety.
In August 2002, UniSea’s Dutch Harbor operation was awarded STAR status in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Voluntary Protection Program (VPP). UniSea is the first shore-side plant and currently the only seafood plant in the United States and was the third facility in the State of Alaska to have achieved this honorable status.
STAR certification is the highest level in VPP. Out of the tens of thousands of companies in the United States, less than 1100 have reached MERIT or STAR VPP status – and UniSea is one of them. UniSea employees are very proud of this achievement. Only operations that have implemented comprehensive, successful safety and health programs and achieved injury and illness rates below their industry’s national average are eligible for STAR certification consideration.
The Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) was created by OSHA in 1982 in order to recognize and partner with employers that implement exemplary employee safety and health programs. Management leadership and employee involvement in the safety and health program, ongoing and thorough worksite hazard analysis and inspections, continuous hazard prevention and control, and safety and health training for employees make up four key elements of VPP. The Dutch Harbor operations began the VPP application and inspection process in April 1996. We achieved MERIT certification in January 2001.
The STAR certification is the result of hundreds of hours of hard work and valuable input by everyone involved in the process. UniSea’s VPP STAR certification is the outcome of numerous reviews of our safety program and many inspections of the Dutch Harbor facility by our own staff, OSHA, AKOSH and other agencies.
