UniSea's Community Service

Unisea, as a company, is concerned about the needs of our communities. In Dutch Harbor and in Redmond our employees are encouraged to participate at both individual and corporate levels to meet the needs of our local communities.

For more than fifteen years UniSea and its employees have participated in the United Way Campaign, earning thousands of dollars in contributions. Each year our employees donate generously and each year their financial contributions and pledges are matched at 100% by Unisea.

As an extension to the United Way Campaigns, UniSea participates in food drives, collecting hundreds of pounds of food for our neighbors in need. A particular highlight at UniSea was the opportunity of collecting and delivering food for the Ronald McDonald House. The Ronald McDonald House is a remarkable charity, providing housing and meals for parents of children suffering from cancer and other life threatening diseases.

Additional food drives have benefited Hope Link, an organization that not only provides local food banks with non perishable food items, but also provides outreach services like ESL teachers. In fact, Hope Link was instrumental in providing ESL teachers to UniSea for employees. This partnership has enhanced and strengthened our relationship with them, our employees, and our community.

Unisea has been recognized by Seashare, for our generous yearly donation of seafood products that help feed the hungry. UniSea recently donated 20,000 pounds of finished product to Seashare, which was in addition to the food donation we made in January. Currently our President, Terry Shaff sits on the Board of Directors of Seashare, which complements our company commitment to this critical cause.

UniSea employees have responded with tremendous generosity to our Christmas “Adopt a Family” and “Adopt a Teen” charity programs. Working with our local YWCA we were able to supply food and gifts to entire families who otherwise would have gone without during the Christmas holiday. The “Adopt a Teen” Program was equally successful, as our employees made Christmas possible with gifts and personal items for marginalized teenagers.

Unisea and our employees in Dutch Harbor interact with the community in a variety of ways including:

  • Partnership in the Unalaska Senior Meal Program by providing meals to community elders three days per week.

  • Volunteering at the school and other community centers with special projects.

  • Provide graduates from the local high school with scholarship money to help with the cost of college tuition.

  • Emergency Medical and Fire Service volunteers.

Whenever there has been a worldwide disaster, Unisea has worked with the Red Cross donating thousands of dollars to worthy causes. This money helped finance the delivery of truckloads of medical supplies and bottled water to Haiti when the earthquake hit, as well as Indonesia when the tsunami hit in 2004 claiming so many lives.

Many UniSea employees actively serve on local, state, and regional boards, commissions, and advisory panels. A number of UniSea employees are mentors, coaches, and cheerleaders for youth sports, music, and academic programs.

Unisea continues to seek new ways to become more involved with the communities in which we work and live. We encourage our employees to be involved both locally and globally.
